A Brief Memory

Once upon a time, somewhere in the vast void of space, there was an entity. A soldier. And there was no one left to tell them the celestial war ended eons ago.

Unaware, the last Watcher looked for their enemy alone.

With their eye, the Watcher could glimpse into a thousand worlds and would blink to view a new one. But after so long, they became curious.

One fateful day, the Watcher saw a little blue planet.

A particular place, a small place. A place The Watcher would have missed if not for their newfound curiosity. And they saw fields of green, animals grazing, people working together. Something so alien but so beautiful, The Watcher loved what they saw. They kept their eye opened for longer than ever have before. But as they watched a family in a field of flowers tell stories to each other, The Watcher blinked.

The Watcher never saw the blue planet again, though they tried to find it again and again. Soon, they felt a new emotion: loneliness.

They tried to find solace in their memories but they couldn't remember. They didn't know how to remember. So, they imagined. As they closed their eye, retreating into their own magic, they saw flowers.

Cossetlings have a faint recollection of their creator. They know they were created with magic by The Watcher but they have no idea what happened to The Watcher. Most are content with that, others are fervent worshippers of The Watcher and believe their creator will return.

Cossetlings live on an overgrown spire-like planet called 'Latorre' at the farthest edge of the universe. Despite their isolation, their rural world is lush and cozy despite being rather antiquated. Their main modes of transportation are magic-fueled steam trains and blimps while they traverse their seas on clipper ships. They can also use their Watcher's Eye, a small gem in their Flower Tail, to go through spacial rifts called 'blinks' to travel to other worlds. They are notoriously curious, going to other realms to observe the inhabitants before returning to tell stories about what they saw.

Since space is so vast, Cossetlings cannot pinpoint exactly where they end up but they can always find their way back home. Most Cossetlings want to find Earth as they have a fascination with it. Indeed, they view Earthlings as kin. Cossetlings believe Earth was also created by The Watcher and Cossetlings are just a different kind of human. They also considered themselves to be more advanced than humans, such as their technology. However, the last time a Cossetling found Earth was in the 19th century and that traveler was hailed by Cossetlings as a hero.

Cossetlings tend to model themselves after what they think humanity is like. They eat, sleep, and reproduce like humans. Like humans, they don't live forever although their lifespans are triple the length of an average human's. Suspectible to illness, injury, and old age, Cossetlings aren't immortal. Interestingly, The Watcher was supposedly around for eons so Cossetlings, being born from that eternal magic, should also live that long. But it seems because Cossetlings have an innate belief that they are human, their magic isn't eternal. After all, no flower blooms forever. Once they pass, the magic goes back to The Watcher's Tree to be given to the next generation of Cossetlings. Cossetlings also believe that humans have the same life cycle as them.

Behavior-wise, Cossetlings have somewhat of a herd mentality. They like being in groups and tend to flock together. They are also very family-orientated, blood-related or not. This extends to non-Cossetlings as they often adopt Cosprouts as pets. Of course, each Cossetling has their own unique personality that may not fit into the generalities of their species.

Overall, Cossetlings live an idyllic easy-going simple life. But there's murmurs of some discontent. Perhaps some Cossetlings desire something more? There may be something on the horizon for the Cossetling world...
