Yule Log Cake

Its that time of year again where Darren has to get the Yule log ready, they were relaxing in the living room with his fireplace and Usagi curled up in her little bed that was made just for her near the fire but not too close or she will complain if it's too hot. She's never satisfied but that difficult attitude just makes her all the more cute to him especially when during a not too serious huff he pokes her nose making it twitch. Darren stayed seated for a little while longer before getting up and straightening his back with a loud pop "I'm getting old" He was in his mid twenties.

He told Usagi he was going to start on their Yule Log now, She raised her head from her comfy position wondering if they should help this time? No, comfy cozy is more important right now as they went back into their bed's plush embrace. Darren pulled on his frilly Lapito embroidered kitchen apron and washed his hands thoroughly before gathering all the ingredients needed "Hmm...should I use traditional flavors or go with something new" he rubbed his jaw a little trying to think about it. Maybe he'll do something new this year as he looked over the jam before getting to work on baking up a treat.

Instead of getting a log to carve and pretty up they instead made a yule log cake to eat together and call it a night, usually Usagi helped but mostly she didn't cause being cozy during the winter time was what mattered most to her. Selfish little thing but again, he loved that as they got working on the cake "Usa I'm trying out new flavors so don't get upset if you don't like it ok?" even if it came out not great at least he tried it out! Take it as a lesson to not mix those flavors again and so on so forth. Darren filled the pans needed for the cake and set up his timer before returning to Usagi and sighing out "I need a nap, think you can wake me when the timer goes off?" He asked his silly rabbit.

She only made a huff noise meaning no, cause she is napping and not him "Ok silly rabbit" they cracked open a book instead and took it slow as to not get too absorbed in reading that they forget the timer and be unable to hear it. The quiet night by a crackling fire is what he looked forward too, most would think he'd be sick of fire and the heat since they're always working away at the glass but no he actually liked how warm it is near a fire and then the flash of cool when away it was a fun temp thing he delighted in, it was almost like magic.

Darren's ear perked up a little and flicked at the sound of the timer and he put a bookmark in place and got ready to roll up a cake full of mixed berry jam, usually he used apple or strawberry but maybe mixed will go well with chocolate but first a little cooling with some wind magic he could use to make sure the cake was warm enough to roll up and not crack or break but cool enough for icing and such. They worked slowly but surely and soon a rolled up cake was now being iced up with homemade chocolate icing "Usagi come and eat" It still needed some finishing touches but it was more or less done.

He finished adding some store bought marzipan mushrooms along the yule log shaped cake, there were even faux bark on it by using a fork to make it "Oh there you are...grumpy from your nap?" She looked like she slept through a hundred years of war as he got her little plate and cup she eats out of and yes they have her name on it too as they kissed the top of her head before showing off the cake to them "I changed the filling this year try it out" they cut off a piece of the cake and she took a sniff before giving a bite, Usagi ate more and that was all he needed to know it was ok enough "Happy yule my silly rabbit" what a lovely night.
